Description

This collection contains the papers of John C. Sheffield (1888-1958) that relate to his work with the Arkansas-Mississippi Bridge Commission.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Arkansas-Mississippi Bridge Commission was created to plan, construct, maintain, and operate a bridge and approaches thereto across the Mississippi River at or near Helena, Arkansas, and Friars Point, Mississippi. John C. Sheffield served as an Arkansas member of the commission until his death in 1958. The bridge was opened on July 27, 1961. John C. Sheffield (November 28, 1888-1958) arrived at Helena, Arkansas, in 1920 where he served as a state legislator, Phillips County Judge, and mayor of Helena. He was also associated with the Arkansas-Mississippi Bridge Commission. Sheffield died in 1958, a few months before the bridge construction contract was awarded. His efforts in the bridge campaign; however, were remembered at the bridge opening on July 27, 1961. Governor Orval Faubus presented Sheffield's wife, the former Pauline Chambliss, with a Helena-West Helena Chamber of Commerce resolution paying tribute to Sheffield's service.
