Description

This collection contains the transcribed Civil War diary of Captain Valentine Merriwether McGehee, 1861-1865, and one letter from Howard M. Ingham of Camden, Arkansas to Dallas Herndon, Little Rock, dated May 20, 1912.

Biographical/Historical Note

Valentine Merriwether McGehee was enlisted in Company G, 2nd Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War. He served as first lieutenant and became commander of the company in 1862. He fought at the battle of Shiloh. After the war, he moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and practiced law until his death on November 14, 1876.
