This collection contains one promissory note from James Ball to Samuel Hall, witnessed and signed by Chester Ashley, dated June 17, 1825.

Biographical/Historical Note

Chester Ashley (1790-1848) was born in Massachusetts and studied law in Connecticut before moving to Little Rock, capitol of the Arkansas Territory in 1820. There, he practiced law with Robert Crittenden, and the two founded the Rose Law Firm, which, at 200 years old in 2020 was purported to be the oldest business in Arkansas and oldest law firm west of the Mississippi River. Ashley served as a U.S. Senator from Arkansas, and Ashley County is named for him.
