This collection contains a letter, from Stan C. Harley to Mrs. R. J. Lea concerning the Dallas County UDC Chapter and information on the "Dallas Rifles" and their battle flag.

Biographical/Historical Note

Stan C. Harley was born on December 7, 1843, in Marshall County, Mississippi, to Major William R. Harley and Louisa J. Thompson. He came to Arkansas with his father in 1858. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted as private in Company C (the Dallas Rifles of Dallas County), Sixth Arkansas Confederate Infantry. He fought at several battles, including the Battle of Pickett's Mill as part of Pat Cleburne's Division. After the war, he worked as a farmer, teacher, justice of the peace, county assessor, and salesman. He married Hattie J. Cheatham on January 3, 1867, and they had ten children. He died in 1923.
