Description
This collection consists of an educational survey of Cleveland County, Arkansas, by the Division of Research and Surveys of the State Department of Education and the County Superintendent of Schools of Cleveland County.
Biographical/Historical Note
Cleveland County, located in southern Arkansas, was originally established as Dorsey County, Arkansas' 71st county, on April 17, 1873. It was named after Stephen W. Dorsey, the U.S. Senator from Arkansas. It was renamed after Grover Cleveland, the newly elected U.S. President, on March 5, 1885, after Dorsey was indicted for defrauding the Post Office. The county seat is Rison.
