This collection contains a copy of Robert Crittenden's oath of office for Secretary of the Arkansas Territory taken in Kentucky.

Biographical/Historical Note

Robert Crittenden (1797-1834) was the first Secretary of Arkansas. He was also the first to serve as Lieutenant Governor in the state. He was born in Woodford County, Kentucky. He studied law and practiced briefly in Kentucky before joining the U.S. Army in 1814. President James Monroe appointed Crittenden first Secretary of Arkansas Territory in 1819. He served in this role until 1829. From July to December of 1819, he served as acting governor. After his political career, he returned to law. Crittenden died on December 18, 1834, in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
