Description
This collection consists of the highlights of the Preliminary Development Plan prepared by the staff of the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission of Pulaski County.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission of Pulaski County, now known as Metroplan, was created after plans to build a U.S. Air Force base near Jacksonville, exposed the lack of central planning authority to coordinate local government involvement. The Arkansas legislature passed Act 26 of 1955, “An Act to Enable Political Subdivisions to Cooperate Jointly in Area Planning; and for Other Purposes.” It was signed by Governor Orval Faubus on February 1, 1955, and the MAPC was officially formed. Its core responsibilities are to determine long-term transportation needs and priorities for federal funding for the region.
