This collection contains a photocopy of a Stuttgart, Arkansas, city directory, which includes telephones and rural routes.
Biographical/Historical Note
Stuttgart is a city in Arkansas County, Arkansas. It was founded by Reverend Adam Burkle, a native of Pattenhardt in Germany. He moved to the United States in 1852 and founded a settlement in Gum Pond after living in Ohio. He later named the settlement Stuttgart after his home. At that time, Stuttgart was the capital of the Kingdom of Wurttemberg. Stuttgart, Arkansas, became a city in 1884. In 1904, rice farming was introduced in the area. It is now the headquarters of Riceland Foods, the world's largest miller and marketer of rice.
