Biographical/Historical Note
The Battle of Middle Boggy, also known as the Battle of Middle Boggy River or Battle of Middle Boggy Depot, took place on February 13, 1864, in Choctaw Indian Territory, four miles south of what is present-day Allen, Oklahoma. Advancing down the Dragoon Trail toward Fort Washita, Union Colonel William A. Phillips sent approximately 350 men from the 14th Kansas Cavalry and two howitzers to attack a Confederate outpost that was guarding the trail's crossing of the Middle Boggy River. The Confederates, consisting of 90 poorly armed men, were caught off guard when they were attacked. They held off the attack for about 30 minutes before retreating. The Union advance continued the next day, but when expected reinforcements did not arrive, it was stalled on February 15, near Stonewall.
