This collection contains four items pertaining to E.N. Weigel, including newspaper articles relating to the discovery of bauxite in Arkansas, a National Register Eligibility form, and a letter.
Biographical/Historical Note
E.N. Weigel was a contractor and businessman in Little Rock, Arkansas. Weigel was contracted in 1885 to build the Sweet Home Pike, a road which extended from Little Rock to Sweet Home. After gravel for the project ran out, Weigel instructed the workmen to get material from a deposit of a gravel-like rock formation nearby on land owned by Judge Ratcliffe. Weigel took some of the rock material to Dr. John C. Branner, who was state geologist at the time. Branner identified it as bauxite. This was the first discovery of the rock in the state.
