Biographical/Historical Note

Centennial Baptist Church was a church, located at York and Columbia streets, in Helena-West Helena (Phillips County). The gothic revival building was completed in 1905. It was listed on the National Register of Historical Places on March 26, 1987, and was designated as a National Historic Landmark on July 31, 2003. Reverend Elias Camp Morris was pastor of the congregation in an earlier building on the site in 1879 and then continued to serve at the church until his death in 1922. Morris was the president and founder of the National Baptist Convention and dedicated his life to furthering the achievement of African Americans. By the mid-1980s, the building reached a state of dangerous deterioration, and the last service at Centennial was held in 1998.
