This collection contains letters from Evan Marks to his wife Mattie.

Biographical/Historical Note

Evan Powell Marks was born on July 27, 1839, in Georgia, to Hastings and Sivility (Powell) Marks. He served in the Confederate Army in the 5th Arkansas Infantry, Company C and in the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, Trans-Mississippi Department. Marks also served as legislator and county and city clerk. He married Mattie H. Thornton on February 23, 1865. The two had five daughters. He died on February 12, 1898, in New Edinburg, Cleveland County, Arkansas.
