Description

This collection includes the correspondence, financial and legal documents, memorabilia, printed materials, and photographs of Lucien Darden Atkins. The majority of the material relates to the years Atkins spent in the Philippine Islands.

Biographical/Historical Note

Lucien Darden Atkins was born in Port Royal, Tennessee, in 1878, and served in the Spanish-American War, reaching the rank of sergeant. Atkins went on to serve in the Philippines as a constabulary, from 1905-1917, retiring as a captain. In 1917, Lucien moved to DeWitt, Arkansas, where he served as a rural mail carrier. He married Lela Pearl Strickland in 1912 and they had four children, Mary Thomas, Marjory Adelina, Lucia Helen, and Erma Ruth. Lucien and Lela divorced in 1954, and in 1955 Lucien married Dorothy M. Moory. He died on April 19, 1961, and is buried in DeWitt, Arkansas.
