Description

This collection contains twelve letters and an article written between 1849 and 1932 between members of the Magruder family of Batesville, Arkansas and Maryland.

Biographical/Historical Note

Lloyd Magruder and Ann Holmes Magruder of Montgomery County, Maryland had twelve children: Mary Catherine Holmes, Lucy Beall, Eugenia, Charles Brooke, Ann Holmes, Olivia Dunbar, Thomas Contee, Arthur, Lloyd, John Holmes, William Ogden Chappell, and Rebecca Johnson. Charles Brooke Magruder moved to Batesville, Arkansas in the early 1840s and his brother Lloyd moved there in 1845 and Mary Catherine Magruder Carter and her husband John Carter. The Magruders in Arkansas wrote letters to their siblings in the east primarily their brother Thomas, deputy collector at port of Georgetown.
