The Society of American Foresters was founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the United States Forest Service. The society seeks to improve forestry techniques and help conserve and properly manage American forests. It is a non-profit organization, and the largest professional society for foresters in the world. The Ouachita chapter of the society includes Arkansas and Oklahoma. Within the Arkansas division are the Caddo, Southwest, Southeast, Northeast, and University of Arkansas at Monticello chapters.
