This collection contains photocopies of four letters, dated between 1837 and 1846, from William Rawlinson, Jr., and James Woodall Rawlinson, to their parents, William Rawlinson, Sr., and Rachel Rawlinson who were living in England.
Biographical/Historical Note
Rachel Rawlinson was born in 1768 in Bristol, Gloucester, England. She arrived in the United States on April 5, 1849 by ship at New York Harbor. She died in Crossville, Illinois, in 1850. Her husband was William Rawlinson, Sr., who died in Islington, London, England, on February 2, 1838, before his wife immigrated to the United States. Their children were William Rawlinson, Jr., James Woodall Rawlinson, and Harriet Rawlinson. William Rawlinson, Jr., was born on June 2, 1793, in London, England. He completed naturalization on November 3, 1837, in Marine Court, New York City, New York. James Woodall Rawlinson was born on August 5, 1798, in Hackney, Middlesex, England. He married Elizabeth Raynes on June 25, 1820 in London, England. Woodall died on December 13, 1841, in New York. Harriet Rawlinson was born on July 1, 1792, in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. She died on June 16, 1844 Islington, Middlesex, England.
