Description

This collection contains a tax receipt and a deed belonging to Bracken Lewis and dating from 1854-1855.

Biographical/Historical Note

Bracken Lewis (1801-1891) was born in Orange County, N.C. in 1801 to Zachariah Lewis and Rachel Bracken Lewis. After Zachariah’s death, Rachel married Peter Mankins and the family would move to Floyd County, Kentucky in 1809. He married Matilda Preston December 23, 1819 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Lewis was the brother of Lydia Lewis Van Hoose the mother of James Hayden Van Hoose, Mayor of Fayetteville. Lewis moved to Arkansas in 1835. Lewis died February 15, 1891.
