This collection contains two photocopies of sheet music for the song, "I Am Near Thee," with words by J.E. Knight and music by Ben F. Scull.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ben F. Scull was born at Arkansas Post on January 27, 1829, to Hewes and Athenais Bogy Scull. Scull attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he received an M.D. degree. He married Mary Jane "Jamie" Reyburn in 1857. He was a physician and druggist, as well as a talented musician and organist. He wrote and published the music for the song, "I Am Near to Thee" in 1858, as well as several other works. Scull was also in the Confederate Army in the 1st Arkansas Infantry. He passed the Confederate Army Board of Medical Examination for the position of Surgeon in 1862. Scull died of consumption in Hot Spring County, Arkansas, on March 5, 1869.
