This collection contains a copy of Legal Ordinance Number 709 to establish and maintain a free public library in Fort Smith, Arkansas dated March 5, 1906.
Biographical/Historical Note
In 1904 the Fort Smith Reading Room Association and the Fort nightly Library Association formed a permanent organization, named the Fort Smith Public Library Association. The association’s purpose was to raise money for a new library building. Legal ordinance No. 709 passed on March 5, 1906 to appropriate 2500 dollars annually for a free public library. After securing a grant from the Carnegie Foundation, the library, the first Carnegie library in the state, was constructed in 1907.
