This collection contains typed transcripts of four letters and one photocopy of a letter, written by Samuel J. Bartlett in 1863.

Biographical/Historical Note

The letters in this collection were written by Samuel Jones Bartlett to his sister, Mary, and his brother. Bartlett was born on December 28, 1836, to Sylvanus and Amanda Bingham Bartlett. He was a soldier in the Union Army and was stationed in Arkansas at Ft. Hindman and fought at Vicksburg on the Union ram, "Monarch.". He died on May 23, 1910. Mary Bartlett was born on April 16, 1843 in Ohio. During the Civil War, she lived in Venton, Ohio and received letters from her husband and two brothers who all served in the Union Army. Herman Weller was born April 28, 1833 in Pennsylvania. Mary and Herman were married on October 30, 1866 in Athens, Ohio. Herman Weller served in Company "A" of the Tenth Pennsylvania Regiment. Mary's brother William Bartlett was born in 1839 and served in Company "B" of the Eighteenth Regiment of Ohio Volunteers.
