Description
This collection contains a March 20, 1837 commission appointing Alexander McClean Lt. Colonel of the 1st Battalion, Crawford County Regiment, Arkansas Militia by James S. Conway, Governor of Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
Alexander McLean was born December 25, 1794 in Albany, New York. During the War of 1812, he served as a private in the New York Militia. McLean married twice; his first wife Mary Ingram died in 1827. McLean’s second wife was Francis McCracken whom he married in 1842. He served as clerk of the Crawford County Circuit Court, and later as clerk of the District Court of the United States for the Western District of Arkansas, a position he held until his death. McLean was the first mayor of Van Buren, Arkansas. Mclean died at his home at Van Buren, Arkansas October 8, 1859.
