This collection contains business papers, correspondence, land and court documents related to John Vaughn and his son-in-law Oliver P. Brown.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Vaughan was born about 1838 in Tennessee. He moved to Arkansas where he served with Company I, First Arkansas Cavalry, United States Army rising from Sergeant to Second Lieutenant. After the war, he lived in Fort Smith where he was a merchant. John Vaughan married an Arkansas native named Anna and they had at least one child, a daughter named Mary. John Vaughan died in April 1898. Mary Vaughan married Oliver Perry Brown in January 1889. Oliver Perry Brown was the son of Newton and Sarah Brown in Clarksville, Arkansas in 1854. Oliver studied law and after practicing in Van Buren, Arkansas for ten years, he and his wife moved to Washington.
