This diary was written by a soldier from Company H, Wisconsin 23rd Volunteer Infantry.

Biographical/Historical Note

The 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered into the Union Army August 30, 1862. The regiment traveled through Arkansas, taking part in the Battle of Arkansas Post in January 1863 and Cypress Bend in March 1863. The regiment was mustered out on July 4, 1865, at Mobile, Alabama. The diary was found in an old house at Allport, Arkansas, in 1973.
