This collection contains correspondence to Dr. Leon Mooney of Mountain View, Arkansas from the Lewis Publishing Company of Chicago, Illinois regarding payment for copies of the "Historical Review of Arkansas" and also includes an historical sketch of Dr. Leon Mooney that would be published in the same publication.
Biographical/Historical Note
Dr. Leon Mooney (1876-1947) was born December 12, 1876 in Mountain Home, Arkansas to Jesse Mooney and Olivia Ann Williams Mooney. He married Laura Blaine Martin on March 6, 1902 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Laura Mooney died in 1904 two years after the birth of their only child, Eugene as a result of complications from the birth. In 1906, Mooney graduated from medical school. Over the years he would practice in El Dorado, Pine Bluff, and finally Mountain Home, Arkansas. In 1907, Mooney's brother Eugene Williams Mooney died while serving as the sheriff of Baxter County, Leona was then appointed to replace his late brother. Leon Mooney was reelected to the position the following year and served as sheriff until 1912. Mooney would boast he never lost a woman in childbirth. He married Effie Baker in 1909. Doc Mooney died on April 1, 1947, after a short illness.
