Description
This collection contains a research paper, "Fort Smith Cadet Band," written by Charles E. Winters in 1971.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Fort Smith Cadet Band was established in 1913 by Anton Lundgren to practice and perform at the 1915 Panama Pacific Exhibition to be held in San Francisco, California. Open to boys between 12 and 14 years of age, Lundren selected twenty three boys to begin practicing in 1914 and when the band began public performances in May 14, it had grown to thirty five members. The band departed for a tour of the Midwest in June 1915 en route to San Francisco. However, attacks by the Musician's Protective Association, a union, who turned the band's application down because of their youth, led to the band's return to Fort Smith and cancellation of their appearance in San Francisco.
