This collection contains holiday proclamations issued by Arkansas governors between 1874 and 1922.
Biographical/Historical Note
The first Thanksgiving Day proclamation in Arkansas was issued by Governor Thomas S. Drew on October 12, 1847. The date was set for December 9, 1847. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln, but the date of the fourth Thursday in November was not established as the official Thanksgiving Day until President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed it into law in 1941.
