This collection contains correspondence, financial records, and legal documents, which date from 1793 to1902, and reflect medical, financial, educational, and social conditions in Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
Charles Refeld, a native of Danzig, Poland, was an early settler of Arkansas Post. He married Magdelain/Magdelaine Billet Menard in 1793. Refeld held a Spanish land grant for 400 arpents near Arkansas Post. Upon Charles Refeld's death in 1821, his estate transferred to his children: Joseph, Lewis Launais, Francis, and Emelia. Lewis L. Refeld married Mary Elizabeth Larquier in 1830. In 1834. Refeld received permission to sell provisions to the Choctaw Indians. Refeld became politically active, serving as Arkansas County Treasurer, 1844-1848. Then he was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives.
