Biographical/Historical Note

John W. Ridgell was born in 1802 in Marion County, South Carolina, to Joel and Martha Sweeney Ridgell and moved to present day Drew County Arkansas in 1835. He married Emeline Sloan in Wilcox County Alabama on September 6, 1827. They were subsequently divorced in the state of Alabama on January 28, 1839 and remarried in Union County Arkansas on September 4, 1840. Ridgell was a plantation owner who traded numerous tracts of land and slaves. He also is listed in Goodspeed's "History of Arkansas" as the builder of the first mill, gin and gristmill north of Monticello.
