Description
This collection contains a booklet with a list of historic homes, a corresponding picture of each home, as well as a short biographical note giving the home's historical significance. Also included are the records and news clippings compiled by the commission between 1963-1966 regarding their efforts to create a historic district in the Quapaw Quarter.
Biographical/Historical Note
At the request of the Quapaw Quarter Committee, the Little Rock Historic District Commission was created in 1963, in an effort to support preservation of historic homes in the Quapaw Quarter. In order to reach this goal, the commission compiled a list of potential homes that needed to be saved and preserved. They faced opposition from the beginning, with very little public support from the homeowners, many of whom wished to rezone their properties from residential to commercial use. In 1966, the commission temporarily gave up the push to get an historic district created.
