This letter from Myra McAlmont Vaughan to John Hugh Reynolds discusses early French and Spanish officials in Arkansas.

Biographical/Historical Note

Myra McAlmont was born October 1, 1844, in Weymouth, Ohio, to Dr. John J. McAlmont and Martha J. Gregg McAlmont. When Myra was three, the family moved to Arkansas. Myra married Francis Terry Vaughan on November 14, 1866, and had one son, Milton Vaughn. Myra McAlmont Vaughan wrote articles on a variety of subjects including women’s issues, education, and history. She died in 1919. John Hugh Reynolds, born January 3, 1869, served as president of Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. An author whose works include "Makers of Arkansas History," he was instrumental in the creation of the Arkansas History Commission in 1905. Reynolds died in Conway, Arkansas, on June 26, 1954.
