This collection contains a building contract for the new Arkansas State Capitol.
Biographical/Historical Note
Construction for the Arkansas State Capitol building began in July 1899. The building project ran into many delays, controversies, and political scandals, which resulted in the completion of the building being delayed until 1915. The building was constructed by many different contractors, including George W. Caldwell and Lester Drake, who made up the firm Caldwell and Drake of Columbus, Indiana. This firm was involved in some of the scandals, which included bribing Senator Frank Butt. The Board of State Capitol Commissioners consisted of John B. McCaleb, Z.T. Matthews, J.M. Flenniken, R.W. McFarland, and W.B. Alexander.
