This collection contains a letter written by William Russell in 1818, and an undated petition concerning Missouri Territory.
Biographical/Historical Note
William Russell was a land speculator in early Arkansas. He was a key figure in the dispute over the ownership of the land on which the new town of Little Rock was to be built. Arkansas Territory was established in 1819. The state of Missouri was admitted to the Union in 1821 as part of the Missouri Compromise.
