Description

Lithograph of the Fayetteville Female Seminary in 1852. Miss Sophia Sawyer was the principal of the school.

Biographical/Historical Note

Sophia Sawyer opened the girl's school in Fayetteville in 1841 on donated land. The school was unusual because it accepted both American Indian and white girls. It was known as an excellent educational institution. The school closed in 1862 due to the Civil War.
