Description
This is a black and white postcard depicting the 1874 Hempstead County Courthouse in Washington, Arkansas. This postcard was never sent.
Biographical/Historical Note
The city of Washington, Arkansas was established in 1824. Once the hub of social and economic growth in southwestern Arkansas, Washington began to decline in 1873. It was still the county seat at that time, so an effort to re-establish it as the center of political power was put forth by building a new Courthouse. The 1874 Courthouse remained active until 1939 when the county seat was moved to Hope. The 1874 County Courthouse now serves as the Visitor Center for the Historic Old Washington State Park.
