Description

This is a election ballot from Arkansas in 1872.

Biographical/Historical Note

In 1872, Arkansas held a gubernatorial election between Joseph Brooks and Elisha Baxter. The election's results - the declaration of Baxter as Governor - would be hotly contested for the next two years and would eventually lead to the Brooks-Baxter War. This conflict would largely be fought on the streets of Little Rock between Baxter's supporters and Brooks' supporters in April and May 1874. The conflict ended when President Ulysses S. Grant stepped in and stopped the fighting, declaring Baxter to indeed be Governor.
