Description

This is a drawing from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper depicting Fort Smith at the time of the great Indian council in 1865.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Native American tribes that allied themselves with the Confederacy met with United States government in Fort Smith on September 8-23, 1865. Dennis Cooley, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, opened the conference by making it clear all tribes that signed agreements with the Confederacy had "rightfully forfeited all annuities and interests in the lands in the Indian territory," making all of the tribes renegotiate their treaties with the United States.
