Description

Letter from George B. Croft of Green County to Governor Henry M. Rector appraising him of the strong influence of Union sympathizers and making a private plan to counteract their political clout. Other information includes the issues with an elected colonel, the lack of a militia and plans to get around that problem.

Feb 20th. 1861.
Dear Govenor
I sease on this leasure moment
to write you a line monday was a sad day
with many noble burts here. The submitionist
and abolitionist has comed this county by a large
majority. It was effected by Dimes & Maelk who
has just Returned home from the Ruck and
the most of the people thought they knew
all about it, and they swallowed every thing
down as gospel they said. Jas W Bush a
strong submitionist is Elected Delegate. he resides
in Craghead county beacause a citizen of the state
last July and if there is a probibility of his
being in in the way, you can have his seat
contested, and Send to me & others to have depositions
taken & perhaps by that means you may prevent
him from doing harm. The Col Elected
in this county Refuses to organize the
the militia, he is a strong submitionist now can you
not appoint a Lieutenant Col & a Major if you
can appoint Col Wm R. Rayburn, Lieut Col
& Alford B. Bobo major and I wish you would
make a call on this county for volunteer camp
I want some this done to force the rewards in

wall. I hope you will do all you can
