Transcription

Johnsons[sic] Island Ohio Jan 1st 1865,
Dear uncle
I have received permission from the
supt(?) [of the] prison, to send to you for some books; I wish
if you have the books or any of them, or can get them in your
place, you would sent them to me, they will [be] a great
advantage to me. I will take good care of the books
and return them by express when I leave here;
I hope yourself and family are in good health,
my health is good enough, but I have nearly
lost the use of my right hand, as you will see by
writing[.] I fear it will be some time before
I can write well again,
I am affectionately yours
N.W. Stewart
