Description
This document commands the keeper of Columbia Township jail to detain Matthew Handler until his trial.
Biographical/Historical Note
Mattais Mock and Henry Marrey accused Matthew Handler of stealing their horse, a serious charge at the time. Horses were expensive and valuable animals for farming, traveling, and transport. But what's most interesting about this remand isn't the content - it's the handwriting. P.R. Pitman, justice of the peace, wrote this document most likely using an inkwell pen. His writing appears messy but noticeably, there's a downward slant and consistent smudge to his letters. It seems likely that Pitman was left-handed!
