Biographical/Historical Note

Rock Island held a prison camp which opened in 1863 to accommodate the large numbers of Confederate soldiers taken prisoner at various battles, having over 12,000 prisoners pass through its gates over the final eighteen months of the war. Nearly 2,000 prisoners were buried there, many dying from sickness or exposure. The United Daughters of the Confederacy was established in 1894 to commemorate the Confederate cause and care for the widows and children of Confederate dead. In later years, they also worked on documenting related history, producing pro-Southern literature, offering scholarships to participants that met their standards, and supported the KKK. An auxiliary organization, the Children of the Confederacy, also exists and is sponsored by the UDC.
