Description

This collection contains a story, drawing, and music sample of "The Arkansaw Traveler and the Turn of the Tune." It is from the book, Pope's Early Days in Arkansas, published by Fred W. Allsopp.

Biographical/Historical Note

"The Arkansas Traveler" is the name of a tune, dialogue, and a painting depicting an urban Traveler and rural Squatter. In it, the Traveler stops by the cabin of the Squatter and eventually joins him in playing the fiddle. The sheet music was first published in Cincinnati in 1847 under the title "The Arkansas Traveller and Rackinsac Waltz" and the painting was created by Edward Payson Washbourne by 1856. By the late nineteenth-century, there was also a humor journal and play published by that name. It was the state song from 1949-1963 and became the state historical song in 1987.
