This collection contains one broadside, Special Orders, No. 23, (Headquarters, Department of Arkansas, Little Rock), honorably discharging Lt. J.L. Russell, Company A, First Iowa Cavalry Volunteers.
Biographical/Historical Note
The First Iowa Cavalry Regiment was the first three-year cavalry regiment accepted into the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. It was organized at Davenport, Iowa, in 1861 and was discharged in Austin, Texas, in 1866. In Arkansas, it was involved in the Battle of Prairie Grove, Battle of Bayou Meto, the Camden Expedition, the Battle of Elkin's Ferry, and the Battle of Prairie D'Ane.
