Biographical/Historical Note
Parkin, Cross County, in eastern Arkansas, is steeped in pre-historic Native American history, but also in twentieth century African-American history. As Parkin grew into an incorporated town, with farming and lumber as the town’s main industries, notable aspects of African-American history began to emerge. The oral history project, “From Sharecroppin to Sawmilling: African American Life in Parkin,” was conducted by Parkin Archeological State Park. The project focused on the existence of the African American workforce at the Northern Ohio Cooperage and Lumber Company (1903-1946); the Northern Ohio School, a one-room schoolhouse built in 1910 for children of the mill workers; the Sawdust Hill Community (1946-1995), and race relations of the town. The project was made possible with a Black History Grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Black History Advisory Committee (now the Black History Commission of Arkansas).
