This collection consists of one circular resolution of the State Grange of Arkansas, signed by Simon Hughes, Chairman, Executive Committee, Little Rock, Arkansas, dated 1870s.
Biographical/Historical Note
The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry was founded in December 1867. Arkansas' first Grange chapter was established in August 1872. Arkansas State Grange was founded in June 1873. The purpose of the Grange was to protect farmers from "middlemen and monopolists," and encouraged farmers to practice crop diversification and economic cooperation. Simon Pollard Hughes (1830-1906) was the fifteenth governor of Arkansas, attorney general, and associate justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court.
