Description

This is a black and white photograph of Bernie Babcock receiving her honorary degree in Literature from the University of Arkansas in the spring of 1951. Seated next to her is Pauline Hoeltzel, who was a member of the University of Arkansas's Board of Trustees.

Biographical/Historical Note

Bernie Babcock was born Julia Burnelle (Bernie) Smade on April 28, 1868, in Ohio. When she was a child, her family moved to Russellville, where she attended school. As an adult, Bernie was a published writer of plays, books, essays, and articles. For five years, she worked as a writer and editor at the Arkansas Democrat before starting her own magazine called "The Sketch Book." She later established the Museum of Natural History and Antiquities, which is today known as the Museum of Discovery.
