Description

This collection contains aerial photographs taken around Lawrence County, Arkansas, in 1937 and 1950 by the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Aerial Photography Field Office.

Biographical/Historical Note

The United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Aerial Photography Field Office originally captured these aerial photographs called photogrammetry, captured by airplanes flying at high altitudes. The Aerial Photography Field Office continues to operate under the Farm Service Agency (formerly the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service). The Soil Conservation Service, which operates under the United States Department of Agriculture as well, uses the photographs to locate divisions in soil types and rock formations. This information aids them in reducing erosion, enhancing water supply, reducing flood damage, and protecting wildlife.
