Description
This collection consists of documents related to individuals, families, and costs associated with caring for indigent people in Lawrence County, such as court orders remanding people to the county farm, requests for county assistance, and bills received and paid for the costs incurred.
Biographical/Historical Note
At one time, people who were incapable of supporting themselves became wards of the county. Often, they were forced to live on the county poor farm or to live with other families at county expense. The process by which this happened was a court proceeding, often initiated by the indigent person or family.
