L.C. Gulley collection, 1819-1898

This collection was once part of a pile of rubbish slotted for destruction at the Old State House. Louis Corneil Gulley, United States postal worker and collector of historic items, saved materials and donated them in 1913 to the Arkansas History Commission, now named the Arkansas State Archives.

This collection contains early correspondence of Arkansas governors and other officials of the territory and state, official correspondence regarding Native Americans, and French and Spanish papers. There are also messages from governors to the Arkansas Legislature, reports from various Civil War generals to Arkansas governors during the war, correspondence regarding Reconstruction, and letters concerning the purchase of land in Arkansas.

The L.C. Gulley collection finding aid is available in the finding aids section of this site.
