This collection contains a contract with the Freedmen's Bureau. It includes a list of the freedmen employed and their wages.
Biographical/Historical Note
In this contract between Henry Morscheimer and the Freedmen's Bureau, Morscheimer agrees to pay the freed blacks on his plantation in Ashley County, Arkansas, in exchange for their labor. One of the main purposes of the Freedmen's Bureau during Reconstruction was to provide labor contracts in order to ensure that the former slaves could earn a living and support their families.
