This collection contains transcripts of letters to Catherine Hooper from Confederate soldiers in Union prisons.

Biographical/Historical Note

Catherine Hooper was a resident of Alexandria, Virginia, during the Civil War. She corresponded with numerous Confederate soldiers while they were prisoners of war. Through her correspondence, Catherine tried to give comfort to the prisoners by providing companionship and offering to write to their families. She used the opportunity to find information about her brother, from whom she had not received news in several months. She also sent money and supplies to alleviate the suffering at the prisons.
